It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt respect that we acknowledge the passing of Sharon Hawke of Ōrākei, New Zealand—a cherished Māreikura, leader, and creative force whose presence, wisdom, and mana touched countless lives. Her passing is a profound loss to her whānau, her iwi, and the wider community she so passionately served.

Sharon was an elected representative for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, where she dedicated herself to uplifting her people and preserving the values, traditions, and future of her community. Her leadership was grounded in strength, integrity, and aroha—qualities that defined not only her work but her entire life.

A proud alumna of University of Auckland – Waipapa Taumata Rau, Sharon carried her knowledge with humility and purpose. She also attended Selwyn College, Corran School for Girls, and Auckland Girls’ Grammar School, shaping the foundation of a life committed to growth, service, and cultural pride.

Sharon will be remembered as a woman of determination and deep compassion. She had a rare ability to bring people together, to uplift those around her, and to lead with both courage and kindness. Her influence extended far beyond her professional roles—she was a guiding light, a source of strength, and a beloved presence in the lives of many.

To her whānau, including cousin Edward Swan and Tania KH, and to all who knew and loved her, we extend our deepest condolences. The loss of Sharon is immeasurable, but her legacy remains woven into the people and spaces she nurtured.

Her farewell reflects the depth of her connection to her culture and community. From her service to her final journey across the waters of Ōkahu Bay, surrounded by waka and those who loved her, Sharon is being honored in a way that reflects her mana and the life she lived.
